Movie Review: Some filmmakers have one overriding theme running across their films. With Krish's movies the theme seems to be "accidental transformation." of the protagonist i.e. Invariably the central characters in his movies end up rising above the self in the course of the film, a quest for nirvana, so to speak of. In his first film, Gamyam, the protagonist, Abhi Ram goes from being a rich brat to an enlightened soul over a bike ride across the state. Vedam is a similar tale of self-discovery of five underdogs - a rock star, prostitute, cable guy and a terrorist. In this film the hero is a young man looking to break away from his roots in a search for a better life.

B Tech Babu is a disgruntled young man, unwilling to bear the burden a great family legacy rooted in theatre. He is the only grandson of a popular Surabhi theatre thespian, Subramanyam, who believes theatre is the only way of life. Babu though tends to differ. A qualified engineer, he sees no point in living a life of penury struggling to make ends meet, in the name of continuing the family tradition. He makes plans to fly to the USA to lead a comfortable life instead. He agrees to put on the grease paint for one last time to fulfil his grandfather's dream of performing in the Bellary Natakotsavam. But then Subramanyam passes away suddenly, leaving the theatre group in complete disarray. They decide to go their way after one final performance in Bellary.

Soon after entering Bellary, Babu runs into Devika (Nayanthara), a journalist working on a documentary to expose the underground mining being carried by Reddyappa, a vicious mining magnate who reigns supreme in the region. Soon enough, Babu earns the wrath of Reddyappa (Milind). It turns out the two have a score to settle which is revealed in a couple of flashback episodes before leading up to a dramatic climax.

We need to talk about Rana's performance in the movie. It is easily his best performance till date and is a few notches above everything else he's done till date. He seems to have worked hard on his diction, dancing and comic timing as well and it shows. Nayanthara does a decent job of playing a hard-nosed journalist. It isn't a very strong character but it isn't really dumb either. Kota Srinivasa Rao is his usual self as is Brahmanadam doing his thing playing a danseuse.

The writing is easily the best part of the movie. The dialogues are crisp, witty and poetic at the same time. The background score by Mani Sharma raises the emotional quotient of the film while giving it a surreal feel. There is plenty of high octane action episodes rolled in along with the mandatory dream song sequences as well.

Director Kirsh seems to have finally found a commercially viable template for his style of cinema. There is still plenty of scope for improvement though. It's just that the emotional curve of the movie is strong enough to keep your attention away from the flaws of logic and issues of ideological integrity. However, it all adds up to makes for an interesting viewing in the end.

Tip Off: It's engaging for sure, but there isn't enough for the front rows to whistle about besides a lone item number.
