Biriyani is the third outing of Tamil actor Karthi during 2013, post unsuccessful Alex Pandian and All in All Azhaguraja. It is known that Karthis is waiting for a hit from long time as his latest releases Saguni, Alex Pandian and All in All Azhaguraja didn’t do well at the box office. Will Karthi taste the success through his upcoming Studio Green Producing Biriyani? Will be answered in a while with Biriyani Review.
KE Gnanavelraja of Studio Greens proudly presenting Biriyani with tag line ‘a Venkat Prabhu’s diet’. Biriyani is the fifth directorial venture of actor turn director Venkat Prabhu after Chennai 600028, Saroja, Goa and Mankatha. Stick to the space to know whether Venkat Prabhu has gained his fifth consecutive hit with Karthi’s Biriyani?
Interestingly, Biriyani is the trade mark 100th musical of young maestro Yuvan Shankar Raja and the audio is a huge hit.

Craving for a break-even after a string of duds, Karthi finally turns to Venkat Prabhu for Biriyani which is one of the iconic films to be served at the end of the year.
Alongside Karthi in Biriyani are Hansika, Premji Amaren, Ramki, Nasser, Jayaprakash and many others. Biriyani is also the proud 100th film for the music director Yuvan Shankar Raja. Venkat Prabhu’s usual menu offers the cinematographer Sakthi Saravanan and editor duo Praveen KL – Srikanth NB.
Biriyani is the story of two friends Sugan (Karthi) and Parasuram (Premji) who get cooked up in a chaotic incident.
The first half which is incident on comics starts off with a funny flashback between the two buddies, leading to the introduction of all the main characters. Story wise, there is absolutely nothing to offer here, as it is mainly baked with Premji’s giggle inducing acts, glamour and the pungent love track between Karthi and Hansika. As the interval scene breaks in, Venkat Prabhu peppers the essence of his story.
Into the second half, and the movie picks up speed and traverses at a rapid pace. Interesting events take place in quick succession, as the second half manages to keep the viewer glued to the screen and even bringing them to the edge of the seat at few instants. The final 30 minutes are the USP of Biriyani, and this is where Venkat Prabhu puts all his brains to use. There is a popping twist at the climax, and the movie ends on a unique note, followed by the hilarious bloopers. Nice to see a little surprise for the Thala fans too!
Biriyani can easily be stated as a delicious comeback for Karthi. He looks zestful with the makeover, trendy costumes and the ed eyes. A much more matured performance with equal intensity in the comic scenes is a huge plus. Hansika is apt for her role, and does it pretty well. Premji Amaren’s funny musings do work to an extent, except for some places where it is flipped over the top. Ramki manages to come up with a convincing comeback. The rest of the cast including Nasser, Jayaprakash, Sampath and the others do complete justice to their roles. The cameos by Sam Anderson, Jai and a few others are fun to watch.
Cinematography by Sakthi Saravanan must be commended as he has captured the tones with expertise. Editing by Praveen KL and Srikanth NB could have been crispier, especially in the first half. Stunts are good, with a special mention going out to the flying fight in the second half.
On the downside, Biriyani doesn’t provide anything memorable for Yuvan’s 100th movie. The songs feel unwanted, acting as huge speed breakers. The BGM too, is nothing great to talk about, except for the climax fight sequence. Logical loopholes are garnished at places in the movie, and one must go in with the thought of forgiving the director for those bits. Fact must be noted too, that Biriyani finds it hard to qualify as a family movie.
Venkat Prabhu must be appreciated for coming up with a piquant script topped with a good mix of many characters. However, the execution from paper to picture hasn’t worked to the full potential as the viewer is left blank at some instances. The presence of an eventless first half too, doesn’t work in the favor of the movie.
However, Biriyani is delicious hit material, and surely Karthi’s best among his last five.

Uyyala Jampala Poster

Movie: Uyyala Jampala
Cast : Raj Tarun , Avika Gor (Aanandi)
Director : Virinchi Varma
Producer: Sunshine Productions, Annapurna Productions(Nagarjuna)
Music : Sunny M.R
Languages: Telugu
Release Date : 25th December 2013
Movie Rating :3.2/5
Verdict : Its a  Pleasant family and romantic entertainer. This movie remains as a good choice as there is no good competition

The small budget romantic entertainer ‘Uyyala Jampala’ is gearing up . Avika Gor, who essayed the role of Anandi in the serial ‘Chinnari Pellikoothuru’, is the heroine in this movie and Raj Tharun will be seen as the male lead. Virinchi Varma has directed this romantic drama.
Story :
Story is set in a typical Konaseema village atmosphere where lives Bava Suri (Raj Tharun) and Maradalu Uma Devi (Avika Gor). From early childhood days, they have an unseen and unexpressed emotional attachment but still are quarrelsome every time. While Suri is practical and matured to lead the poor family with his widowed mother (Anita), Uma Devi is still into adolescence landing into unnecessary troubles to face the anger of her rich father (Ravi Varma). A practical joke played by Suri shores Uma Devi into infatuation with impish personality Parthu. Obviously, it is Suri who saves Uma and soon she realizes of being in love with Bava.
As financial standards between two families become a hurdle, Suri traces childhood friend (Kireeti Damaraju) living in USA as right life partner for Uma Devi. What happened later on? When and how Suri changed his perception on Maradalu?
Positive Points :
Raj Tharun is a good find for the Telugu Industry. This youngster has great talent and ease and if he plays his cards right, he has a great future ahead of him. He will be a perfect fit for certain genres and characters. Avika Gor has given a neat performance in the film. She has a certain following because of Balika Vadhu/Chinnari Pelli Koothuru serial and this will help the movie.
The biggest surprise package in the film is Punarnavi. She has given a solid performance and she looks quite good in the role of a girl who is madly in love with Suri. Anita Chowdhary and the other character actors have performed adequately.
The second half of the film has good emotions and some scenes will surely strike a chord. Nice dialogues and well conceived scenes will make you root for the characters. The pre-climax episode will melt the hearts of many.
For a small budget film, the film has very good visuals. Casting is perfect for each and every role.
Negative Points :
The first half of the film could have been better, as it fails to engage viewers as effectively as the second half does. The graph of the film is quite flat for the first 30 minutes or so.
After a stirring pre-climax block, the film comes to a very abrupt end. The climax block could have been handled in a much better way. While the songs sound good, most of them do not really help the film’s flow in any way.
The film’s appeal might be limited to A centers and multiplexes. If you are looking for hilarious comedy and ‘masala elements’, stay away.
Technical Aspects :
Cinematography is a big asset for the movie. The village locales have been shot well. Sunny’s background score is good. Editing is neat, but some scenes could have been trimmed off in the first half.
Virinchi Varma’s direction is pretty good for a first timer. Dialogues have good depth.
Verdict :
‘Uyyala Jampala’ is a small and cute little romantic film that will make you smile at the end. There are good emotional scenes and fine performances in the film that offset some of the issues like a flat first half. If you are looking for a clean family entertainer this weekend, look no further.

Movie:  R Rajkumar
Cast :  Shaid kapur, Sonakshi Sinha
Director : Prabhudeva
Language: Hindi
Release Date : Dec 06,2013
Movie Rating : 2.5/5Producer : Sunil Lulla, Viki Rajani
verdict : If you are a die-hard fan of south movies or a bigger fan of their no-brainer potboiler Hindi remakes, then do go for this movie and have a gala time. For the rest, wait for the DVD or better still watch it, free of cost, when it comes on TV.

Just when you thought that Prabhu Dheva had perfected the art of churning out potboilers with typical southern spicing, ‘R… Rajkumar’ disappoints like nothing else.
‘R…Rajkumar’ is the kind of formulaic film that was very popular in the 1970s. When made well, it works because of nostalgic value but unless there is at least one unique thing in the plot, the action formula has become so passé.
Rajkumar (Shahid Kapoor) decides to become the right-hand person of a local goon after he’s struck by love at first sight. His research is so bad that he doesn’t even realize that he is helping the rival gang. By interval the director has exhausted all his ploys and yet we are forced to sit through another hour of mindless violence and slapstick humour.
If stories like this one need to have some sort of structure, we have already seen the set-up, the conflict and have a fair idea of the resolution by the end of the first half and the later half holds little promise to keep us hooked.
We have grown tired of watching flimsy plots that reek of shoddy writing and have nothing to boast of but slow motion Matrix-style action sequences, peppered with songs shot in exotic locales and raunchy items songs shoved in just to titillate the audience. I just couldn’t get over the ‘Kaddu Katega’ song from ‘R…Rajkumar’, how do the censors even let this pass?
Sonakshi Sinha has made a giant leap in her acting career; from just batting eyelids in her previous films, she gets to shoot a fiery glance now and then in ‘R…Rajkumar’, she also gets to break a beer bottle on someone’s head in her introductory scene and start a small fire by burning wedding cards.
Shahid really needs help when it comes to choosing the right role. He is saddled with a character that has little scope to improvise. The right dance moves and all the Keanu Reeves-style action is just wasted in this film.
‘R…Rajkumar’ is a huge disappointment because there is hardly a single praise worthy thing in the whole film.
