Director : Venkat Prabhu
Producer: K. E. Gnanavel Raja
Music : Yuvan Shankar Raja
Languages: Tamil ,Telugu
Release Date : December 20, 2013.
Movie Rating :2.75/5

Biriyani is the third outing of Tamil actor Karthi during 2013, post unsuccessful Alex Pandian and All in All Azhaguraja. It is known that Karthis is waiting for a hit from long time as his latest releases Saguni, Alex Pandian and All in All Azhaguraja didn’t do well at the box office. Will Karthi taste the success through his upcoming Studio Green Producing Biriyani? Will be answered in a while with Biriyani Review.
KE Gnanavelraja of Studio Greens proudly presenting Biriyani with tag line ‘a Venkat Prabhu’s diet’. Biriyani is the fifth directorial venture of actor turn director Venkat Prabhu after Chennai 600028, Saroja, Goa and Mankatha. Stick to the space to know whether Venkat Prabhu has gained his fifth consecutive hit with Karthi’s Biriyani?
Interestingly, Biriyani is the trade mark 100th musical of young maestro Yuvan Shankar Raja and the audio is a huge hit.

Craving for a break-even after a string of duds, Karthi finally turns to Venkat Prabhu for Biriyani which is one of the iconic films to be served at the end of the year.
Alongside Karthi in Biriyani are Hansika, Premji Amaren, Ramki, Nasser, Jayaprakash and many others. Biriyani is also the proud 100th film for the music director Yuvan Shankar Raja. Venkat Prabhu’s usual menu offers the cinematographer Sakthi Saravanan and editor duo Praveen KL – Srikanth NB.
Biriyani is the story of two friends Sugan (Karthi) and Parasuram (Premji) who get cooked up in a chaotic incident.
The first half which is incident on comics starts off with a funny flashback between the two buddies, leading to the introduction of all the main characters. Story wise, there is absolutely nothing to offer here, as it is mainly baked with Premji’s giggle inducing acts, glamour and the pungent love track between Karthi and Hansika. As the interval scene breaks in, Venkat Prabhu peppers the essence of his story.
Into the second half, and the movie picks up speed and traverses at a rapid pace. Interesting events take place in quick succession, as the second half manages to keep the viewer glued to the screen and even bringing them to the edge of the seat at few instants. The final 30 minutes are the USP of Biriyani, and this is where Venkat Prabhu puts all his brains to use. There is a popping twist at the climax, and the movie ends on a unique note, followed by the hilarious bloopers. Nice to see a little surprise for the Thala fans too!
Biriyani can easily be stated as a delicious comeback for Karthi. He looks zestful with the makeover, trendy costumes and the ed eyes. A much more matured performance with equal intensity in the comic scenes is a huge plus. Hansika is apt for her role, and does it pretty well. Premji Amaren’s funny musings do work to an extent, except for some places where it is flipped over the top. Ramki manages to come up with a convincing comeback. The rest of the cast including Nasser, Jayaprakash, Sampath and the others do complete justice to their roles. The cameos by Sam Anderson, Jai and a few others are fun to watch.
Cinematography by Sakthi Saravanan must be commended as he has captured the tones with expertise. Editing by Praveen KL and Srikanth NB could have been crispier, especially in the first half. Stunts are good, with a special mention going out to the flying fight in the second half.
On the downside, Biriyani doesn’t provide anything memorable for Yuvan’s 100th movie. The songs feel unwanted, acting as huge speed breakers. The BGM too, is nothing great to talk about, except for the climax fight sequence. Logical loopholes are garnished at places in the movie, and one must go in with the thought of forgiving the director for those bits. Fact must be noted too, that Biriyani finds it hard to qualify as a family movie.
Venkat Prabhu must be appreciated for coming up with a piquant script topped with a good mix of many characters. However, the execution from paper to picture hasn’t worked to the full potential as the viewer is left blank at some instances. The presence of an eventless first half too, doesn’t work in the favor of the movie.
However, Biriyani is delicious hit material, and surely Karthi’s best among his last five.

Varna Movie Review

Movie: Varna
Cast : Anushka , Aarya
Director : Selva Raghavan
Producer: PVP Cinema
Music : Haris jayraj
Languages: Telugu,Tamil
Release Date : November 22,2013
Movie Rating :1/5
Verdict : Better not to see the movie !!

Selvaraghavan Alias Sri Raghava has come up with a new flick by name ‘Varna’ starring Anushka &Arya.Producer of this film is PVP.,who has earlier produced movie like: Balupu.Lets see how the movie is:
Story:
There will be two couples in two different worlds. One couple will be on earth and other in some other world. There will not be much clarity about this world. Both the couples are: Anushka ( 1. Ramya 2. Varna) Arya ( 1. Madhu Balakrishna 2. Mahendra). There will be some love sequences between them.
Unfortunately in mysterious world,Anushka(Varna) kills her self after she forcibly married to Arya by the King.At the same time,in the real world,Anushka(Ramya) dies in a simple accident.
In both the worlds,Arya is a sincere+genuine lover to her. With the sudden death of Ramya,Madhu go mad and tries to search for her memories in everything.
Varna, comes back alive with the help of a local god in the mysterious island.Madhu Balakrishna will also be bought to the mysterious island from earth,by Arya — . He was about to commit suicide.
Then a series of incidents takes place. However,Madhu Balakrishna(Arya) identifies himself and confirms that he came to someother world and his love Ramya is dead.
What happens next? How will he survive this un-expected series of incidents that happen in his life? Where will he go next from that mysterious world? Is the rest of the story.
Analysis:
The director wanted to create a whole new world of LOVE. May be inspired by some Hollywood flicks. He lost the grip very frequently. The love and entertainment quotient are not up to the mark. The movie has too many flaws. It is far from realistic.Usually,a movie should be either nearer to the realistic in nature,or a complete socio fantasy types with full of fables and entertainment with complete graphic work.
This one has a very good graphic work.VFX affects are so nice. The main problem is the story line. There is no proper sync between the two stories that run in parallel.
Audience frequently feel that they were forcibly pushed towards a new diferent world that is hard to believe.
The movie’s backbone is PURE LOVE &LIFE AFTER DEATH for pure Love. The director could not able to do justice for the two stories. He failed to create an intensity that is required for a socio fantasy movie.
Few scenes were extremely good. Especially the fight between Arya and an Animal is shot superbly. The graphic work is awesome there! Few comedy sequences are good between Arya &Anushka. It is all about Arya &Anushka!! The whole story revolves around them and they are the top performers.Even though they tried their best, due to the lack of proper story line,am afraid to say that this movie will fail @ the box office.
Plus:
Graphics Work
Graphics Work
Graphics Work
Minus:
Story
Dubbing
Editing
Overall,an un-conventional flick from the director and the producer. This will not fit the bill.A routine movie goer will not at all like this movie. If at all you do not have any other work, feeling bored over the week-end,you can give a try.

Desingu Raja Movie Preview

Desingu Raja is an tamil comedy – romantic movie direction by Ezhil “Manam Kothi Paravai” fame. Vimal, Bindu Madhavi and Suri are in the lead roles. After the grant success of Manam Kothi Paravai the movie is expected.
After a fairly successful outing with Manam Kothi Paravai, director Ezhil started his next titled Desingu Raja, which was in a similar genre rural comedy. He roped in Vimal to play the lead Idhayakani, who has been named so by his parents and is a diehard MGR fan.
Bindu Madhavi was signed to play the female lead as a Rajini fanatic in the movie, thus pairing with Vimal for second time after Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga. Muktha Bhanu danced for one song along with Vimal and the group dancers which was shot in Thiruvarur.
In April 2013 a song sequence featuring Vimal and Bindu Madhavi was shot for almost ten days in a set worth 15 lakhs. In May 2013 the crew shot a song sequence for 10 days with Vimal and Bindu Madhavi in a set resembling a fruit godown.
D. Imman collaborates with Ezhil for second time and his first collaboration with Vimal. The soundtrack contains 5 songs which was written by Yugabharathi. Single track “Ammadi Ammadi” was released in May 25, 2013. The audio was released in 19 June 2013 at Suryan FM Radio station.

Desingu Raja Movie Review:

Rural potboilers in Tamil cinema are usually about a love story or rivalry between two villages. Not surprisingly, “Desingu Raja” merges both the common themes into a story, which partially entertains, but otherwise is a wasted effort. Despite its flawed screenplay and a plot that barely evokes interest, it’s the sporadic laughs that hold audiences through the film.
This is the love story of Idhayakani (Vimal) and Thamarai (Bindu), who belong to different families which share a warring rivalry for generations. Will love between the young couple triumph over familial hatred? This forms the rest of the story.

Since time immemorial, we have had films with a similar storyline. I wonder what makes “Desingu Raja” any different from any of these films that have come over the years, except for the cast and some earnest comedy.
It’s an unambitious film on a mission to entertain its viewers with full-length comedy. Honestly, it doesn’t succeed in its mission because the forced humour works for a few minutes, but after a while it really tests your patience.
Vimal and Bindu scored a hit earlier this year with a film called “Kedi Billa Killadi Ranga”, and the makers of “Desingu Raja” were under the impression that the pair will elevate the film with their presence and help it succeed. But, the truth is that the last time that this couple appeared on screen, their presence was complemented by a decent storyline, which is completely missing in the case of this film.
While a crop of new filmmakers are trying to tread never-explored territories of filmmaking with films such as “Neram” and “Pizza”, films such as the one in discussion and several more have been heavily relying on comedy. I agree the success rate of comedy films is high vis-a-vis other genre films, but eventually the fate of a film depends on its story.
Director Ezhil, who’s been in the industry for over a decade, barely displays a streak of brilliance. In fact, the film raises questions such as – “Has Ezhil lost his directorial spark?”, as one walks home after watching film. He has undoubtedly made a couple of good rural entertainers over the years, but he seriously needs to move on and try different films.
Vimal too has been typecast for village-based roles. Even though he has played them to perfection, it is getting extremely boring to see him in similar roles. He should look at doing different films outside of comedy genres and gauge the reception of his fans. I’m positive that people will welcome him with open hearts.
Bindu Madhavi is trading her pretty looks for portraying similar roles. She is more comfortable wearing a half-sari and playing a village belle than trying something unconventional.
Verdict: It’s perfectly alright to skip “Desingu Raja” if you still haven’t watched it. For those who have already watched it, I feel sorry for you, truly.

Release Date : 26 Jul 2013
Cast: Vishal, Aishwarya Arjun, Santhanam
Movie: Pattathu Yaanai (U)
Direction: Boopathy Pandian
Producer: S. Michael Rayappan
Banner: Global Infotainment Pvt Ltd
Music: Thaman
Genre: Comedy, Romance
After kicking off the year with Samar, Vishal is here for the second time in 2013 with Pattathu Yaanai. After the success of Malaikottai, director Boopathy Pandian and action star Vishal are joining hands on a “fun, action, romantic” movie, Pattathu Yaanai. Produced by Michael Rayyapan and directed by G.BoopathyPandian, Pattathu Yaanai has Aishwariya Arjun, Santhanam, Jegan, John Vijay etc alongside Vishal. Music is by Thaman Sai while the camera is handled by S.Vaithy.
There are two other box office drivers for the movie: Santhanam and Santhanam. Yes, for those who haven’t had enough of the comic takes of the most happening star in Tamil cinema now, Pattathu Yaanai has the actor playing a double role.
Also adding novelty value to the movie is the launch of Aishwarya, the daughter of ‘action king’ Arjun. Incidentally, Vishal had started his film career assisting Arjun in his heydays on his directorial ventures Vedham and Ezhumalai.
Story:
Pattathu Yaanai is the story of a common man who rises up to the challenge thrown against him.
The movie starts off with Santhanam being introduced as Gouravam, a caterer. Vishal and his friends arrive at the scene to aid Santhanam in his cookery chores. The premise moves to Trichy, where Vishal, Santhanam and his group plan to set up a hotel. Comic scenes entangled, we have the incidents with Aishwariya Arjun too stitched in. A series of events leads to Vishal locking horns with one of the dons in the city. A story is revealed at the interval block, from where the movie progresses on.
Into the second half, and we have more of the so-called story and less of comedy. Lots of new characters are introduced with John Vijay propelling himself as the comic villain. A cat and mouse game follows, and how Vishal pulls himself out of these troubles is what Pattathu Yaanai is all about.
Performance:
Vishal is fine in his acts, but one puts up the question as to when he will come back with a thumping film, just like his Thimiru. The lead actress Aishwariya Arjun is bland, just a walking doll. She needs to learn a lot, especially to dance and a ‘debut’ is all that can be said about her. The supporting artists are okay, but the villains are damp squibs, especially the guy who flexes his abs at the end.
If there is one man who might save this movie from a dump, it is Santhanam. Even though the much talked about dual role is nowhere to be seen, Santhanam keeps us smiling whenever he appears onscreen. Some of his jokes in the first half do crack pick you up.
Technical Analysis:
Nothing new in the musical department from Thaman, and the BGM which is done by Sabesh Murali is mediocre too. There are just three fight scenes in the movie, but they are well choreographed by Anal Arasu. Technically, Pattathu Yaanai is satisfying, but I would have loved to say something nice here.
We have seen tons of commercial entertainers in the past, and Pattathu Yaanai is yet another one in the list. Boopathy Pandian has a fine outing here, but it just isn’t enough with the current trend of movies passing on. Pattathu Yaanai fails to deliver something out of the bag, so watch it if you have nothing else to do over the weekend. An average film in all aspects.
